When Your Furnace Isn't Heating Properly: Troubleshooting Tips

Blog

If your home isn't as warm as it should be, it may be that your furnace isn't working properly. There are some things you can check to get your furnace working properly so that you aren't left in the cold. Read on for some troubleshooting tips.

Is the Thermostat Working?

Take a look at your thermostat to see that it is in good working order. Make sure it is switched on and is turned on to the "heat" setting. If your thermostat takes batteries, check that it has working batteries in it.

Then, check the wiring to be sure it is connected to both the thermostat and the furnace properly. If you've done any renovations or work around your home recently the wiring may have been shaken loose or somehow disconnected.

Is the Gas Turned On?

The gas valve may have gotten shut off somehow, so be sure the valve is turned on completely. If your furnace doesn't have any natural gas going to it, it isn't going to work.

If you smell gas coming from your furnace, shut the valve back off, and call a professional HVAC service technician immediately for assistance.

Is the Air Filter Clean?

The air filter in your furnace can get clogged with debris. If the air filter is clogged, it can cause an air-flow problem to your system. Without air in your system, it can choke and simply stop working.

This premature breakdown of your system can result in a costly repair. The cost of a new filter and the time it takes to change it is not much at all. It's best to change the filter every other month to prevent a breakdown.

Is the Furnace Clean

If your furnace is filthy, it can also cause a breakdown of your system. Vacuum the furnace thoroughly with a shop vacuum to clean up dust and debris.

Chances are if your furnace is filthy, the air filter probably is too. Make sure when you're cleaning your furnace that you change the air filter as well. Vacuum out your vents throughout the house while you're cleaning to ensure dust and debris isn't going to cause another breakdown.

If your house is cold and your furnace isn't heating your home like it should, check the above to try and get it working again. If none of these things was the problem, call an HVAC service company to have your furnace inspected and repaired.

Talking About Electric Heating Systems

Hi there, my name is Shelley. Welcome to my site about electric heating systems. Electric heat has recently fallen out of favor due to the efficiency of natural gas systems. Electric heat is still suitable for small buildings that do not need the high temps provided by upgraded systems. I will use this site to explore all of the building types that can benefit from electric heating systems. I will also share information about system components, installations and repairs. I welcome you to come by often to learn more about this exciting topic. Thanks for coming by. See you soon.
